My jointing techniques When jointing, I wrap my fingers around the toe of the plane so my index finger is running along the board as I plane. With a little practice, I could feel minute deviations and hold the plane level on the board thus taking the place of a jointer gauge. This works much better than it sounds like it will. Try it before you scoff... This technique, used in conjunction with probably the single most useful tip I have learned in woodworking makes jointing an absolute pleasure. Place the two boards that are going to be glued to each other back to back and joint them at the same time (only one board is shown in gif). In this manner, minor deviations in the joint are cancelled out when the boards are glued up. In addition, this saves time and provides a larger surface to plane, making it easier to hold the plane at the proper attitude.
